As a person known for a creative spirit, Amir is from Southern California. Amir earned his BS in Sociology, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He works in the social justice arena. There are many influences for this collection, including political organizations and figures. Among them, he considers, Black Feminist Future, Pauli Murray, Sistersong’s AURJ culture shift work, Bayard Rustin, and SONG’s Freedom from Fear campaign to be reflective of these pieces.
This is his first solo show, with moments of media cultural impact in the Atlanta, GA area, to his credit. He was a part of (in a tangential role) the music video, I am Samantha, which features the music of Benjamin Scheuer, in 2020. (The video was directed by T Cooper and Allison Glock-Cooper). In the summer of 2024 (the month of July), Mr. Jones was a part of a community show, in Atlanta GA, at the Joan P. Garner Library. A long time resident of the city of Atlanta, he is photographer and essayist—all of which being self taught. Using the interests and love of literature, the poetry of James Baldwin, the works of Kiese Laymon, Octavia Butler’s volumes, and Adrienne Maree Brown’s book, the grievers, were references for the work found in this collection. Amir’s has set about to share as much of the city’s strengths and beauty as he embarks on this exhibition. With his artistic acumen, you’re invited to see, hear, and explore this work.
