Join the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History for our monthly Saturday Matinee at Auburn, a cinematic experience dedicated to celebrating powerful storytelling from across the African American diaspora—bringing beloved literary works and award-winning films into meaningful community conversation.
This month, we present If Beale Street Could Talk, starring Stephan James, KiKi Layne, Academy Award–winner Regina King, and Colman Domingo. Based on the novel by James Baldwin and directed by Barry Jenkins, the film is a tender yet unflinching portrait of young love tested by injustice.
Set in 1970s Harlem, the story follows Tish and Fonny, whose plans for a future together are disrupted when Fonny is wrongfully accused of a crime.
Come ready to reflect, engage in thoughtful post-screening discussion, and connect with fellow film lovers in an atmosphere that honors history, love, and resilience. Light refreshments will be provided.
Watch. Reflect. Discuss. Celebrate the stories that demand to be heard.
