Household farming, export oriented manufacturing and a closely controlled financial sector to support the two. This book provides a superb review and analysis of how some Asian countries bootstrapped their economies while others failed. Joe Studwell demonstrates there is a minimum of two types of economies that work- developmental and free market - in spite of what "market efficiency" economists profess. Quite readable for the layman.
