Hailed as a genre-changing work, Neil Gaiman's Sandman has won many awards. First published under the Vertigo imprint as a monthly 22-page comic starting in 1989, this series would define many aspects of 1990's culture, from the popularization of goth fashion to the naming of the Lilith Fair. Originally collected into ten graphic novel paperbacks, this series remains popular and influenced music, film, television, and art for decades before the Netflix series adapatation.
This list includes both the thirtieth anniversary editions and the deluxe editions. The thirtieth anniversary editions were color corrected from the original graphic novel printings (which often had coloring errors due to the print processes of the time). The deluxe editions DO NOT FOLLOW ORIGINAL GRAPHIC NOVEL ORDER and include bonus materials not included in the ten graphic novels. The deluxe editions follow the original publishing order of the twenty-two-page comics, and often include other comics that were on sale at the same time but have Sandman featured.
If this is your first read-through of the series, read the thirtieth anniversary editions to get the story without any side business that can bog down the original narrative flow. If you're revisiting this work as an old favorite, go ahead and grab the deluxe editions for the bonus materials you may have missed if you weren't a hard-core comics fan in the 90's.
