In 1969, Kurt Vonnegut's breakout novel Slaughterhouse-Five or the Children's Crusade: A Duty-dance with Death catapulted this World War Two veteran into stardom. He was invited to give speeches, lectures, and commencement addresses around the country, and received many awards and honors over the following five decades. Vonnegut combined the influence of earlier American greats like Henry David Thoreau, Mark Twain, and Ambrose Bierce with the narrative appeal of UK science fiction greats like Robert Louis Stevenson, H. G. Wells, and George Orwell. If you've ever enjoyed any story where the characters were "unstuck in time", you probably have Vonnegut to thank.
