MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

Mental health issues among African Americans is rarely discussed at length although it is estimated that about 25% of African Americans seek mental health treatment. This is proportionately low compared to Caucasian Americans who seek treatment (about 40%). July is Mental Health Awareness Month for people of color. The Auburn Avenue Research Library contains a number of books on mental health which may help broaden the understanding of this sensitive issue.
