Commemorating Juneteenth

This Reader's Advisory highlights resources centered on the Juneteenth holiday and its' significance to the history of Africans in America. A few of the included resources offer in-depth historical information, such as the Confederacy's control of Galveston in 1865 and their subsequent defeat and surrender, which ultimately resulted in the issuance of General Orders No. 3, also known as the Juneteenth Order, which freed 250,000 Black people from slavery in Texas. On June 17, 2021 President Joseph Biden signed a bill into law making Juneteenth a national holiday. The holiday, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day, commemorates the "official" end of slavery.
